MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
- Best Time: June to October
- High Season: July to September
Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and underrated wildlife destinations. Located approximately 283 kilometers (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam, it is part of the larger Selous ecosystem, making it a vital conservation area. The park spans over 3,230 square kilometers and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and over 400 bird species. Its open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and the Mkata Floodplain often draw comparisons to the Serengeti, earning it the nickname “Little Serengeti.” Despite its beauty, Mikumi remains less crowded than other Tanzanian parks, offering a more intimate and serene safari experience.
Mikumi National Park enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) throughout the year. The park experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season (June to October) and the wet season (November to May). The dry season is ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense. The wet season transforms the park into a lush, green paradise, perfect for birdwatching and photography, though some roads may become impassable due to heavy rains.
Things to Do
Game Drives: Mikumi’s well-maintained road network makes it easy to explore the park. Morning and afternoon game drives offer the chance to spot the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), as well as zebras, wildebeests, and hippos.
Birdwatching: With over 400 bird species, Mikumi is a haven for bird enthusiasts. Look out for colorful species like the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, and bateleur eagle.
Walking Safaris: For a more immersive experience, guided walking safaris allow you to explore the park on foot, learning about its flora, fauna, and smaller creatures.
Cultural Visits: Nearby villages offer cultural tours where you can interact with local communities and learn about their traditions and way of life.
Photography: The park’s stunning landscapes, from the Mkata Floodplain to the distant Uluguru Mountains, provide endless opportunities for capturing breathtaking shots.
The best time to visit Mikumi National Park is during the dry season, from June to October. During this period, wildlife is easier to spot as animals congregate around waterholes, and the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. However, if you’re a bird lover, the wet season (November to May) is ideal, as migratory birds flock to the park, and the scenery is at its most vibrant.
Mikumi is easily accessible by road and air. From Dar es Salaam, it’s a 4-5 hour drive via the A7 highway, making it a popular weekend getaway. For those short on time, domestic flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, or Arusha to Mikumi’s airstrip, which is just a short drive from the park entrance. Public buses and private transfers are also available for budget-conscious travelers.
